Well, I must tell you that connections are everything! As it so happens my partner’s college-age daughter spent considerable time in Prague last summer and was kind enough to pass on her impressions. Her report was most enthusiastic. The following are some verbatim excerpts:
Language: “Most people speak english, though knowing some czech is nice”. Some suggested key terms spelled phonetically:
“Dob-ry-den” means “good day, pardon, excuse me”.
“De-koo-yoo” is “thank you”.
Now this next one is key. Commit it to memory: “Pivo” means “beer” and if ordering 2 beers at a bar (my minimum) display this desire using your thumb and index finger instead of using a peace sign and you will be rewarded by being charged less (Why? Don’t know!). “De-va” is “two”. So in review, when ordering those 2 brews, politely say: “Dob-ry-den, de-va pivo, de-koo-yoo” while holding up that thumb and index finger and you will be all set. I can’t wait to try it!
“Mul-veet-ay An-glist-kay?” means “Do you speak english?” which is a helpful way to start conversation.
Beer: “Czech beer is amazing!” (so states the young lady) “Of course get a pilsner, but do also try the Kelt”.
Clubbing: “The coolest place in the city is called Cross Club, which is a giant underground place built out of metal sculptures! It’s very popular.”
Food: “I loved the dumplings!”
Sights: “Go to Wenceslas Square, where the velvet revolution started”.
“The TV Tower is a very strange sight-a large tower that was designed with babies crawling on it-definitely eastern european”. You can make of that what you will. And with that I say, Dob-ry-den.

I’ll try to commit it to memory—it’s many fewer syllables than one of the pieces we’re memorizing. I also have the feeling that if we use it too many times, we’ll be crawling up that TV tower along with the babies!

I can dig it!
